Estimates indicate that the issue of hunger and food insecurity in our area is quite large. In Virginia Beach, over 11% of our population is in need. In just the zip codes closest to St. Andrew’s (23462 and 23464), over 14,000 people are hungry. Feed Kempsville, an initiative of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, was formed to bring attention and focus to the church’s efforts to meet the critical demand for food by hungry people within our local community. It brings our partnership with Church of the Ascension’s food pantry and our support of Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ Beach Bag program under one ministry umbrella. In addition, the bounty from a “community garden” will help meet the nutritional needs of the poor within our community.
